Mary Ann Mallard, 90, of Brunswick, passed on May 12, 2024 at Hospice of the Golden Isles after a short illness. Mary was the daughter of Roger and Ruby Akins, born April 23, 1934 in Statesboro, Georgia.
Mary was predeceased by her husband, Loy Edwin Mallard; her brother, Jones Akins (Betty), and sisters Elizabeth Nych and Sandy (Waldo) Cribbs. She is survived by her sister, Emily Burn; her children, Thomas Mallard and wife, Debbie, Connie Fisher, Debra Gleaton and Gary Mallard and his wife, Connie; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister in law, Betty Akins.
On September 20,1952, Mary married the love of her life, Loy Edwin Mallard. Mary was a homemaker and was known for her delicious cooking. She and Loy both grew up on a farm in the country and always had a garden, from which the family was spoiled with fresh creamed corn and other vegetables. Mary loved her family and doted on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was known as ‘Mema’.
Mary enjoyed bowling, fishing, and was an avid sports fan. She enjoyed playing softball, volleyball, and basketball in church leagues in her younger days. She and Loy also enjoyed traveling and went on many trips together with friends and family after his retirement.
She was an active member of Pine Ridge Baptist Church and was a faithful member of her ladies Sunday School class.
A service to celebrate Mary’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 16 at Pine Ridge Baptist Church, officiated by Reverend Bill Alderman. The family will receive visitors starting at 10:00 a.m. in the sanctuary.
The family would like to thank the staff at Hospice of the Golden Isles for their kindness and compassion during Mary’s stay.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pine Ridge Baptist Church Building Fund.
